Eid al Adha in Morocco - The Feast of Sacrifice

Morocco observes many national and religious holidays. Eid El Kebir is one of those major and significant events that has been observed over hundreds of years. It commemorates Ibrahim’s (Abraham) willingness to sacrifice his son to God. It is celebrated around the 10th to the 13th days of the Islamic month of Du al-Hijjah.
As with most practices, Moroccans will throw their unique traditions on these events, too. In some cases, you will not know that a holiday is religious if you do not already have an idea about it. On the facade of it, it may not look religious at all. Eid al Adha (also Eid El Kebir) in Moroco is a 3 days religious holiday. The religious part of it is done in the morning of day 1 by a special prayer at an open area (not a traditional mosque). For some people, another part (the Pilgrimage - Hajj in arabic) takes place outside the country - in Mecca,Saudi Arabia. The rest of day 1 and the last 2 days are more social in nature. One of the good things about The Feast of Sacrifice (Eid El Kebir) is that it is a time for forgiveness where people reconcile and agree to bury past greivances.

Modern Celebrations of Eid El Kebir in Morocco have not signicantly changed over many decades. It has always been marked by day 1 tea and cake breafast,family and friends visits for greetings exchange,kids gifts,morning prayer,the lamb sacrifice.Then the early morning lamb barbecue for the next 2 days. A dying Eid tradition (may be already dead) was the afternoon horse race called Tbawreeda.

Visiting Marrakech: Things to do and places to see

Marrakech, one of Morocco's major imperial cities, is more touristy than any other moroccan city. It's almost a shrine for the passionate international travellers.

The tourist diversity in terms of nationalities, age, background and gender grants Marrakech a well ranked position in world tourism.

Marrakech is located four hours further from Casablanca. Its weather is hotter in summer time and colder in winter season.

Besides its hot summer bright sun, in the high tourist season (July - August) Marrakech turns hot with amazing leisure and entertainment activities to do and see.

How to get to Marrakech?

If you're coming from Europe,you can fly direct to Marrakech international airport. Those coming From North America and Asia will arrive in casablanca airport. From there you can take a connecting flight or take the train from the airport to Marrakech.

Those coming from Tangier,can take the overnight Tangier-Marrakech train(The Marrakech Express).

You can also take the local bus from and to Marrakech(Supratours buses stop close to Marrakech train station.CTM bus station is located near Bab Doukkala,a 20 minute walk from Jema el-Fna)

There are many places to stay in Marrakech both luxury and budgets

When Tourists want to make every aspect of their trip "al marocaine",they stay at riads.

A riad is a traditional Moroccan house situated in the Medina (old town).
All riads have a central courtyard that will often have a fountain, restaurant or a pool. Some riads also have rooftop terraces where you can eat breakfast and look out over the city.

Medina(Old town)

A wonderful ancient Historic site but still very much hectic part of town. Stunning cultural colorful experience,senses-stirring atmosphere,abundant and unique photos opportunities.

Well worth a visit are the twelve miles long 13th century walls of
the medina(Ramparts) with their artistic gates. One of these gates(Bab ed-Debbagh) leads to the tanneries.

Jamaa El Fna

Nothing memorable than hopping into a Caleche(horse-drawn carriage) from the garden square and head to jemaa el-fna late afernoon.

This square sits in front of a quartier of shops. It is a lively open-air circus that is still reviving entertainment activities that havent changed much since the medieval times.

At the end of the afternoon,the place transforms into an entertainenent center:Snake charmers,story-tellers,Hippie-like jugglers,Monkey tricks performers,street artists. The place is surrounded by snack stalls,orange juice stands and overlooking cafes. Cafes can be full and crowded, you need to go early at least 2 hours before dusk.

Souks(Markets)

Old-desinged big "flea-markets" Stretching out north of Djemaa el Fna around Rue Souk Smarine.Ben Youssef Medersa(religious school),a great example of Moroccan architecture, is just close by.

The Koutoubia Minaret

The almost 70-metre high Koutoubia Minaret is the most ancient of the three Almohad towers (the other two are the Hassan Tower in Rabat and the Giralda Tower in Seville)

Badi Palace(Place des Ferblantiers)
Historical 16th century ruined palace with stork residences. built in 1578 on the orders of Ahmed El Mansour after defeat of the Portuguese in the Battle of 3 kings. Badi Palace is also one of two places(besides Djemma el Fna) where the annual Marrakech Popular Arts Festival takes place

Things to do, attractions and places to visit in Tangiers, Morocco

Tangier (Tanger in French,Tanja in local dialect) is located in the northern part of Morocco just 14 kilometers from Spain and 60 kilometers from Gibraltar at the intersection of the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea.

There are pleny of tourist attractions and activities you can do in this beautifu city which Moroccans would like to describe as the "Bride of the North".

Tangiers is a combination and mixture of Moroccan, European and African flavor. It was an international zone up till late fifties and a mecca for freedom and romance seekers from Europe and the USA.

Artists, writers, politicians and all kinds of adventurers have found in Tangier the ideal shrine for their dreams. The Rolling Stones,Williams Tennessee,Matisse,Richard Diebenkorn,Oscar Wilde,Cecil Beaton,Winston Churchill are sample names for the sake of an example.

The Grand Socco (The Large Market)

This is the dynamic heart of Tangiers. As the name suggests, it used to be a marketplace and a casual entertainment center in the crowdier traditonal sense similar to Jamaa-el-Fna in Marrakech. It's now more of a place to leisurely stroll,get a feel of the city,relax on a nearby cafe and do some people watching in preparation for your tour off to the Medina gate to the Rue d'Italie.

This place is also the bridging point between the old medina and modern town. More importantly, this spot holds a nationalistic pride for Moroccans in general since it witnessed the historically famous call for independence speech made by late king Mohamed V in 1947.

The Old medina

Old medinas are rich of history and culture and are unique. Most of these are located in the hot non-coastal regions of Morocco. But then again Morocco itself is an ancient country and old medinas, to a lesser depth, are also found in coastal cities, and Tangiers happens to be one of them.

Yep,Tangier(also Tangiers) still cheriches its old organs. Taxi drivers are knowledgeable about their hometowns and know its history wholeheartedly. They can take you there, sit back and relax while glancing to see old tanks and hearing about the Spanish and Portuguese pirates and how tangiers tried to protect itself from the shore.

The Kasbah

Part of the old medina is The Kasbah,it stands on an upper level hilly site of town which gives it a great access view point over to the Straits of Gibraltar,neighboring Spain and the Tangier port to its right. The Kasbah,whose fortifications are amazingly in very good condtion, embodies a 17th. century Dar el Makhzen (The House of the Governor). It now serves as a museum for Moroccan arts and archeology.Beyond its front gates,hide nice carved ceilings and beautiful gardens. For photography fans, the place looks nicer at sunset and sunrise.

The American Legation (cultural centre and museum)

Right in the heart of the old Medina, stands a historic American landmark attesting to Morocco'old diplomatic and cultural relations with the United States. Morocco was the first country to recognize the independence of the United States. In fact, this is even United States'only historic landmark overseas.

The American Legation was established back in 1777. The building is listed on the Secretary of State’s Register of Culturally Significant Property.
Important enough since it is the first American property outside the US territory. It is located at 8 Zankat America (Avenue of America).

The building contains a museum,library and a conference center. So if you are into into history,old documents,arts(it holds artists meetings and exhibitions), this place worths its visit.

The Caves of Hercules (La Grotte d'Hercules)

Driving about 14 kms west of Tangier at Cap Spartel,a rendezvous with a stunning archeological point of interest is awaiting you - The Caves of Hercules.

On the way, Get your camera ready,sit back and relax while enjoying a look down on the fascinating atlantic beach scenery and Tangiers'mountaineous landscape.

You can do a camel ride on your way to Hercules Cave. Camels are supposed to be in the desert. But for the sake of ease and flexibility,they are often brought from their environment to the coastal cities during the high tourist season.

A camel ride in Tangiers does not replace a camel trekking excursion in Erg Chebi/Merzouga. But it can give you that romantic feeling being on top of a camel.

Hercules refers,of course,to the mythical figure Hercules who founded Tangier and carved out the Straits of Gibraltar with one blow from his sword. the caves apparently used to be his rest place after finishing his 12 labors. It is not conclusive how these caves have been formed.

Apparently,they have been carved in part by nature and in part by man. The caves have been reported to be used as dwellings by some ancient civilizattion who quarried stone since the Archaeological excavations have produced evidence of human bones and flints remnants the findings of which can found at the Kasba museum. For safety reasons, only a small percentage of the caves are open to visitors.

The caves are situated at about 100 meters above the Robinson Plage that stretches off to the south. Views from inside the caves looking out over the ocean are of great beauty. The opening itself matches the map of Africa.
Historically, we're talking about a Neolithic habitation 6000 BC. The caves were discovered in 1878 and opened to the public in 1920.in 1952,it became a National Heritage site.

The other neighbouring caves(the Cave of Ace Sayfia,Al Alia Cave and Al Khil Cave) also found to contain prehistoric remains from the Neolithic period.Also worth a visit are the nearby Roman ruins of Cotta- A 2nd century Roman town. It's no more than 5 minutes walk from The Caves of Hercules. Some section of the site still shows signs of the typical Roman baths and temples.

Shopping in Bazaars and Souks

Great place for bargains in leather,carpets,copper and othe hand-made crafts and souvenirs.

Forbes Museum
As per wikipedia:

"Forbes Museum of Tangier was a museum founded by the American publisher of Forbes magazine, Malcolm Forbes. The museum had been located in Malcolm Forbes' Palais Mendoub, a grand 10-acre (40,000 m2) property located on the Marshan in Tangier, and had a collection of a total of 115,000 models of lead soldiers.

These figures re-enacted the major battles of history; from Waterloo to Dien Bien Phû, realistically recreated with lighting and sound effects. Entire armies stood on guard in the showcases, while in the garden, 600 statuettes bear silent homage to the Battle of Three Kings.

After Forbes' death in 1990, the property was put up for sale by the children and is now owned by the government of Morocco as a residence for visiting dignitaries.

Film Location - The Forbes Museum was chosen for the villain's lair for the 15th James Bond Film The Living Daylights 1987 starring Timothy Dalton.

Brad Whitaker played by Joe Don Baker was an international arms-dealer who also had a fetish for warfare and collecting military items."

Fes (also Fez - Fès in French)

Fes is Morocco's most hitorically exotic imperial city. In fact, it is the only old ciy in the world with a living medieval heritage. History and culture served in a traditonal recipe are galore.

From old medina, museums, monuments, palaces, souks to riads, hammams and Moroccan cuisine at its excellency.

If you can't find a certified and dependable guide(hotels arrange this,too), you can hire a taxi. Most taxi drivers are knowledgeable about their city and tourirst points of interest.

Fes el Bali (Old Fes)

This is Fes'old Medina, UNESCO World Heritage Site. A rare historical gem that is still preserved.

From 11th century Bab Boujloud, the main entrance to the medina, lays an impressive labyrinth of 9400 small winding streets and narrow alleys that steep cross up and down.

Yes,that's almost 10 000 hustling and bustling narrow routes. A place where merchants, suppliers, assitants, shopers, visitors, donkeys and horses compete for a walking space.

Though the intersections have color codes (i.e blue for monuments route), a dependable guide is a must if you intend to delve any further. Failing this, few hours may not be enough just to get back to where you started.

This is a plunge back in time into a huge exhibition of functioning medieval shops, old palaces, riads, royal gardens, mosques, craftsmanship and artwork. Other stuff to see are artisan's workshops, souks, old transportation modes(donkeys and horses. Did we mention narrow streets?).

Here are some of the highlights that you can find in Fes el Bali("a" as in "Anne").

Zawiyaht & Mosques

Zawiyah(plural Zawiyaht) is an Islamic religious school or monastery with a fountain inside. Some of the most famous are Zawiyah Moulay Idriss II and Zawiyah Ahmed Tijani.
These are closed to non-muslims but you can peer into them if you pass by at times of prayer.

Al Qarawiyeen is both a mosque and a university for islamic studies, culture, language and other learning. It is not to be confused with a madrassa as in Asia. Though the foucs was initially on Islamic studies such as Quranic studies,Islamic law and theology, the curriculum also includes Arabic language,mathematics,physics,chemistry,foreign languages and even some astronomy.

It was founded in 859 by Fatima al-Fihri, the daughter inheritant of a wealthy merchant. It is considered the oldest still operational academic degree-granting university in the world.

Its interior islamic design is stunning. Andalucia Mosque is another monument in Fes el Bali. If you're muslim, you can learn a lot from entering those places. Old architecture that makes sense then and still makes it today. You can learn more about Al Qarawiyeeen from Wikipedia here.

The square next to al Qarawiyeen also turns into a night retreat for the locals especially in summer time. Worth some strolling with history roaming in the air.

Madrasa Abu Inan

This is the only madrasa in Fes with a minaret - a marvel of Marinid architecture. Founded by Abu Inan Al Farisi (who also founded a another religious school with the same name in Meknes). Other places to visit in the medina:

Furniture market (Gives you a glimpse of the old wedding furniture).

The Gates of Fes

Fes is walled by four massive city gates of amazing tile work and grand architectural designs.

Museum Dar Batha

Built by Sultan Moulay al-Hassan I in 19th century, this is a Hispano-Moorish palace houses the finest of traditional Moroccan crafts and pottery. It is located at Place du Batha.

Nejjarine Museum(The Carpenters Museum)

This used to be the old traveling merchants hotel(funduq).Features traditional woodwork that dates back to the 18th century when the funduq was built.

Upstairs was the hotel,downstairs was a stable for travelers horses and the trading square.

Dar Bennani(also called Musee de la Musique Andalouse )

A museum,library,art gallery and Andalusian music conservatory. Located at Derb Cheikh El Fouqi near Palais de Fes.

The Arms Museum

Also called Borj.
This fortress,built in 16th century, houses a large collection of antique arms reflecting the moroccan craftsmanship at the time.The building also has a nice view of the medina.

Belghazi Museum

A museum of traditional arts and crafts. The place itself used to be a large traditional riad.

The tanneries

The tanneries in Fes are located nearby the Qarawiyeen Mosque. You can view the tanneries from the terraces looking down on the tanners' yard. The roofs belong to the surrounding leather shops. This is a rare opportunity to watch reams of cow hides treated in huge vats of dyes.
The skins processing involves no modern machinery and is manually done the way it was since the 11th century.

The smell can be intolerably strong since pigeon poo and cow urine and other strong smelling raw materials are integral ingredients in the process. So, may be it's a good idea to have some (perfumed) handkerchiefs handy. Leather stuff are more expensive to buy here than in the medina.

Dar el Makhzen(Old Royal Palace)

Place Seffarine,Fez Bazaar & Souk el Henna

These are all flee markets.

Moulay Yacoub Thermal Station

A therapeutic Spa with warm mineral healing waters located at about 20 Kms to the north west of fes. Locals throughout Morocco used to come to this place to immerse themselves in its warm and soothing waters. These hot springs are said to be great for curing dermic deseases. If you stay at the Sofitel,they also have an attached Hammam.

Moulay Abdellah Square

This is the city center square. A leisurely night tour by a petit taxi after supper or on your way back to the hotel for the night can be refreshing

Fez Mellah

Located in Fes-Jdid (new Fes),a walled Jewish quarter with a fortified gateway.

Les essais dynamiques du matériel roulant du tramway devant relier les villes de Rabat et Salé, ont été lancés mardi à Salé.
La première rame du Tramway Rabat Salé, pouvant atteindre des pointes de 70km/h, est composée de deux véhicules de 32m chacun avec une hauteur de 3m, un design inspiré de l'art du zellige marocain, des motifs de la fontaine du Mausolée Mohammed V en particulier, et une harmonie des formes et des couleurs à l'extérieur, au plafonds et au niveau des sièges pour en affirmer la personnalité.

Chaque rame double compte 118 places assises et 12 portes de chaque côté pour une capacité globale d'environ 580 passagers.
Le réseau de deux lignes d'une longueur totale de 20km avec ses 31 stations permettra le déplacement quotidien de 180.000 voyageurs dans des conditions optimales.

Les usagers du transport urbain à Rabat étaient visiblement contents de prendre le bus. En effet, des bus flambant neufs ont été mis en circulation sur de nombreuses lignes. Même le wali de Rabat, Hassan Amrani, sest permis «une virée» pour tester le confort du service.
Dans un premier temps, il sagit de 50 bus qui ont été mis en circulation par le délégataire sur lagglomération Rabat-Salé-Témara, Stareo. Dici fin mai, 100 autres véhicules devraient remplacer lancien parc. «150 véhicules ont été commandés. Ils sont de conception européenne et montés en Chine», souligne Noureddine Lazrak, maire de Salé et président de lautorité délégante du transport urbain pour la région de Rabat. Un autre contingent de 200 bus devrait arriver dans les prochains mois. Selon Lazrak, le coût total dinvestissement pour renouveler le parc de Stareo durant la période du contrat avoisine 1,9 milliard de DH.
Les premiers bus mis en circulation ont été affectés aux lignes 58A-58B et 58C à partir de Bab Al Had à Rabat vers Témara en passant par Agdal, le quartier des hôpitaux et Hay Ryad, soit en tout 230 arrêts. Ces lignes desservent des régions très peuplées et qui affichent un grand besoin en matière de transport. Il sagit notamment des quartiers Mersse et Chiagua, à Témara.
«Les bus sont dotés dun plancher surbaissé et sont équipés de rampes facilitant ainsi laccès aux personnes handicapées ou à mobilité réduite», déclare Mourabite Boujmaâ, chauffeur chez Stareo, et qui a suivi une formation spécifique pour la conduite de ces bus.
Les véhicules sont également équipés dun système de climatisation et de chauffage et de caméras de surveillance. Il sagit de prévenir ou de sanctionner les actes de vandalisme.
Sur le plan de lenvironnement, la nouvelle flotte répond aux normes Euros 3 définies par la législation internationale et permettant de diviser par six les émissions de gaz nocif. La mise en circulation de ces nouveaux bus va permettre de renforcer le parc actuel en exploitation de près 380 bus. Car, en dépit des améliorations constatées ces dernières semaines, les citoyens souffrent durant les heures de pointe, notamment sur les lignes 55, 43 et 21. Une situation dont profitent les transporteurs informels.

Eid al-Adha is Arabic for the Feast of Sacrifice or Festival of Sacrifice.

Eid el Adha( or al adha) is a an annual Islamic observance/celebration in many countries. It serves as a reminder of when Ibrahim (Abraham) was willing to sacrifice his son (Ishmael) to God.

Muslims observe this day by slaughtering an animal (usually a mutton/sheep) and then offering most of its meat in charity to poor people.

The sacrifice symbolizes obedience to God and giving is an expression of sharing,generosity and help to the needy - one of Islam's most important commandments.

This observance is usually around the 10th of the Islamic month of Dhu al-Hijjah. Now the 10th varies among countries. Since the Islamic calendar is lunar, moon sightings can vary from country to the other. Therefore, moon sightings (and sometimes regional customs) cause a variation of the date for Islamic holidays. It all depends on when the New Moon is first seen. So it's common that in some year there may be a one day error.

Eid Al-Adha Lasts for three days and occurs at the conclusion of the Hajj - The annual Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca.

Other popular names for this feast: Eid el-Kebir, Aïd el-Kebir (mostly French).

Public transportation plays a major role in connecting moroccan cities and cargo transport. The ONCF (Office National de Chemin de Fer) has recently added more trains,more lines and shortened the liaison time between major cities.

Wherever you are in the country,you can be sure to find a nearby train station to take you to any destination. Train fares are cheap and compartments are comfortable. Trains are also protected by security agents who travel aboard them.

If you happen to be in Tangier,you can take the overnight train to Marrakech at 9pm. Direct lines also serve Rabat/Casablanca. Trains going to Fes,Mekness and Oujda used to swich rail paths at Sidi Kacem(2 hours before Rabat).

It is a good idea to book your train ahead a day or two whilst you're in the country. Although you cannot book trains ahead from outide Morocco, you can certaily check all the train schedules and fares at the ONCF website (The National office of train services) and here.

Sometimes you may need to use buses since trains do not cover all places. For example,there are no railways to serve Agadir,Essaouira,Beni Mellal,ouarzazare,merzouga and most of the Moroccan sahara region.

CTM ,Supratours and SATAS(+212 24 43 70 49) are the three main bus companies in Morocco. All offer Long-distance travel and are air-conditioned.

CTM being the oldest has some stations next to the train stations in the main cities. SUPRATOURS is affiliated with the ONCF,so ask the train office for supratours buses(autocars) available to continue your journey where the trains are not available. For example,you can book your bus ticket at the train station in Tangiers if you're heading to Essaouira from Marrakech. As soon you get off the train in Marrakech,you will find buses available to take you to Essaouira in around 3hrs(170 kms) including a 30 minutes break. Of course, you can always buy a ticket anytime in Marrakech for an essaouira trip. You can buy it at a kiosque facing Bab Marrakech next to Ville Nouvelle(New Town-the modern part of Marrakech). It's near the train station or any taxi can take you there. The supratours maroc website used to be at http://www.supratours.ma/ but it seems not be working or may be under maintenance.

Port Tanger Med Passagers

Le nouveau port marocain tanger med passagers est maintenant Opérationnel depuis le 5 juin 2010. En effet,le port a officiellement entré en fonction lundi 17 mai,2010.Le port tanger med a deja bien servi le transit de plus de 300.000 passagers Marocains résidant à l’étranger via le port espagnol d’Algéciras. A noter que la fin des travaux du port Tanger Med Passagers et son ouverture officielle sera le mois de juillet 2010.

Les passagers de tanger med notament les Marocains résidant à l’étranger vont aussi bénéficier d'un nouveau centre d’accueil Tanger Méditerranée.

Cette nouvelle aire de repos offrira du parking,des espaces loisir et de restauration. D'autre part,la ligne ferroviaire de Tanger-Rabat/Casablanca a deployee deux fois plus de trains q'auparavant. En total, l'ONCF a deploye 24 trains pour relier Tanger aux différentes villes du Maroc.

La ligne Tanger Med-Casablanca,desserte par les trains de marchandises,a ete aussi améliorée(le trajet est desormais parcouru en 60 km de moins.

Petite remarque:

Le site officiel de Tanger Med passagers est tangermed-passagers.com. Les Marocains résidant à l’étranger,les résidant en retour du voyage et les touristes sont maintenant familiers avec ce site. Apparemment,cet alias web addresse qui se redirege vers www.tmsa.ma/port_passager/ est un peu instable. Parfois, le site ne s'affiche pas parmis les resultats recherches de google si on tape la phrase "tanger med" qui est la phrase la plus utilisee en cherchant pour le site du Tanger Med Port.

MOROCCO’S TOURISM EARNINGS RISE 12 PCT IN 2010 FIRST QUARTER, SAYS MINISTER

DUBAI, May 10 (NNN-MAP) — Morocco’s tourism receipts increased by 12 per cent in the first quarter of this year, accordign to Tourism Minister Yassir Zenagui.

He said here over the weekend that the tourism industry in Morocco was not affected by the world economic crisis.

The minister told the Dubai-based TV channel Al Arabiya that the rise in tourism receipts was the because of the
quality of Moroccan hotels’ services and products and the efficiency of the ministry’s strategy in this area.

Zenagui said that the number of tourists visiting Morocco rose by 16 per cent in the first quarter of 2010 and
the kingdom expected to attract some 9.4 million tourists in 2010.

So you’re contemplating a trip to Morocco, huh ?

And of course, you’d appreciate any tips or helpful info, right ?

I hope I can be of any help.

Let’s get into it!

As you may already know my friend, it would be impossible to explore, see and do everything you like in just one trip to a country. And Morocco is no exception.

Small of a place as it is, Morocco straddles quite a few wonders of nature. From the Mediterranean sea coasts and dazzling Atlantic Ocean cities to the imperial medieval towns full of culture, architecture and cuisine to the Atlas mountains, Southern desert kasbahs to the dreamy dunes of the Western Sahara.

I know!

Your ambitions may be just as broad!!!

But if you’ve got some strings of time and budget, a little compromise here and there will still keep you just as satisfied. At the end, your trip will,to a degree, still depend on what you like to do, how many time you can afford and your travel budget.

For example, are you a history and traditions savvy traveler ? The type of a terrain/gardens walker/stroller ? Musuems,shops and souks lover or you’re more into seashore sunbathing and magical coastal sunsets.

Are you a quad bike rider ? Would you like to try a camel ride instead ? Are you into mountain climbing or do you prefer to just sit back and relax on a spa or a riad during the day and stroll on coastal promenade at the evening.

Am sure you must already know what you like and prefer. Preference should be given the priority here as that would short list your activities and itinerary.

By the way, you cannot just go ,you should have an itinerary upfront and stick to it.

A timely-efficient laid out itinerary will not only allow you to exhaustively enjoy all you want according to schedule but may even leave you with some extra time you can use for extra sightseeing. You can event adjust your point of entry to meet with your sightseeing goals.

Also don’t feel deprived if you have to narrow down your stay to a particular area. In fact, in many instances, you can enjoy a nice package mixture even within one area. For instance, While in Tangier, you can do a camel ride on your way to Hercules Cave. Camels are supposed to be in the desert. But for the sake of ease and flexibility, they are often brought from their environment to the coastal cities during the high tourist season. So don’t be surprised if you see a camel convoy along the beautiful coastal beach of Azilah or even Agadir.

A camel ride in Tangiers does not replace a camel trekking excursion in Erg Chebbi/Merzouga. But it can give you that romantic feeling being on top of a camel and call it a day.

Old medinas are rich of history and culture and are unique. Most of these are located in the hot non-coastal regions of Morocco. But then again Morocco itself is an ancient country and old medinas, to a lesser depth, are also found in coastal cities, how about that ?

Yep,Tangier(also Tangiers) still cheriches its old organs. Taxi drivers are knowledgeable of their hometown and know its history wholeheartedly. They can take you there, sit back and relax while glancing to see old tanks and hearing about the Spanish and Portugese pirates and how tangiers tried to protect itself from the shore.

Not as famous or busier but Casablanca’s Old Medina is just as enjoyable. Casablanca is coastal and breezy and accommodates the magestic Hassan II mosque,the Neo-Gothic Roman Catholic church, Temple Beth-El and La corniche d’Ain Diab.

A 3-week tour is ideal to visit most of Morocco's major attractions.

If you’re coming on train from Tangiers, Sidi kacem (a small non-tourist town) is the intersection to either Meknes/Fes or Rabat/Casablanca/Marrakech. Usually, you do Marrakech first then on your way back you pass by Casablanca,Rabat and (thru Sidi kacem again) you go to Fes on the other side.

You can skip Meknes if you cannot afford to spend a day over there. Meknes can be seen from the train station on the way to the nearby Fes.

Asilah (pronounced Azila by Moroccans)

Asilah is a small atlantic coastal town between Tangier(50kms) and Rabat with predominantly Portuguese influences.

Asilah has come to gain a reputation as the City of Artists. It is the preferred destination for artists to hang out and organize their art exhibitions and festivals.

Being a relaxed place and a break from the bustling cities of neighboring Tangiers and Tetouan is one reason. The other is its beautiful frescoes painted on its house walls. Blue and white paintings on house walls is one of the artisitc activities.

The best time to visit Asilah is in summer time to enjoy its hot sandy beach. Also most festivals are held during July-August in particular Artwork,music and dancing(the International Cultural Festival,Flamingo,etc).

Points of Interest

The 15th century Portuguese Ramparts

With a view looking out over the shore, these ramparts were designed by the Portuguese military architect Botacca in late 15th century.

The Old Medina Gates

Worth a visit if you're in Asilah are Bab el-Kasaba and Bab el-Homar(the old medina's old gates).

El Kamra Tower
Another Portugese Military Defense Base. It is the highest point in the medina.

Palace of El Raisuli the Bandit

Raisouli, the Lord of the Rif, Sultan to the Berbers and the last of the Barbary Pirates, did not like the Spaniards and the Portugese. Not much is known for the reason. Let's not forget Asilah became a springboard for Portuguese attacks on Moroccans.

The southern cliffs and the 15th century fortifications attest to the Portuguese presence. It may also be he was a descendant of those ancestors tortured and exiled from Spain during the Spanish Inquisition.

But Raisouli, increasingly feeling the sadistic joy out of power and wealth, went overboard and turned from a pirate into a bandit capturing any foreigners in exchange for ransoms. Raisouli did not know of travellers but invaders. One of his victims was British writer Walter Harris.

The El Raisuli story inspired the American director John Milius for his famous adventure film "The Wind and the Lion" starring Sean Connery as "the last of the Barbary Pirates".

Church of Saint Bartholome

Just outside the medina, on Ave de la Liberte lies Church of St Bartholome,a reminder of the Iberian influence, and is still in use by local christians. One of the few churches in Morocco that still ring their bells every sunday. The church is open to visitors.

Hassan II Cultural Centre

Has an art gallery and holds various events during the year.

Things to do and places to visit in Tetouan, Morocco.

Tetouan is another Moroccan city on the Mediterranean Sea, near Tangier, that was established back in 1305.

Just as Marrakech is referred to as the Red City. Tetouan is known as "The White Pigeon".
A largely white painted medium-sized city with dominantly Andalusian Flavor.

Moroccan, Islamic, Phenician, European and Spanish (Andalusian) architecture are harmoniously merged together. The Big Mosque, Spanish Cathedral, Babu Saidi, The Kasbah The Medina and Hassan II Square are proof examples that make of Tetouan a historical melting pot of cultures.

The old Royal Palace, a 17th century building, at Place Hassan II(Hassan II Square) is itself a reflection of the Hispano-Moresque architecture. The palace is closed to public entry but its main ornate gate Bab Er-Rouah can give you a mental idea of what it's beyond and photos are allowed to be taken. Place Hassan II,where the old and new town meet, is the dynamic heart of tetouan . It's a square so grab a coffee at a nearby restaurant(reported to have the best coffee flavor in morocco) and do some people watching.

Tetouan,too, has retained its old medina part(a UNISCO world heritage site) that is rich of history. It was a pirates hub and once the capital of Spain's colony. The Romans destroyed the city at some point then was repopulated in the 16th century. Tetouan was the refuge for Jews, the Moors and the Moriscoes who escaped the Spanish inquisition.

Well, worth a visit is the Archeology museum located at Algeria avenue. Through its beautiful relics,artefacts and mosaics, the Archeology museum is a contemporary memory of the roman ruins of Lixus and Jewish ancestory. You may need a guide to accompany you through the city's winding streets and alleys and to go see the old fort,walls and the well preserved fences.

Tetouan enjoys an abundance of natural organic produce - Fresh meat from healthy-diet fed livestock,poultry,eggs,vegetables,fruits,olives,gains fill its markets from surrounding agricultural areas.

If you are a fan of a cloth and linen, ask for Souq El Hout and shop away.

If you're on your way back to Europe, Ceuta(Sebta) is just nearby for a ferry crossing.

Things to do and places to visit in chefchaouen, Morocco

Chefchaouen (also called Chaouen) is located at the heart of Morocco's Rif Mountains.

It's a quite and peaceful place with natural beauty. While marrakech is a red-painted city, Chefchaouen's old medina is a sky blue one.

From the bus station, take a taxi to drop you in the heart of medina (that's their terminus anyway). If you don't have a return ticket. it's a good idea to book one in advance whilst at the bus station (CTM is the recommended bus company).

Accomodation is both readily available and affordable. Mint tea may not be your favorite if you're coming from North America (I know what you're thinking, yes it's sweet). Tea is good for your colechstrol and blood circulation. And Chefchaouen is the place to get over it and try it.

Women can also try a henna artist to decorate their hands and feet with beautiful tattoo desings.

The Plaza Uta el-Hammam,at the center of medina, is the ideal place to relax in your first day, drink some mint tea and do some people watching.

Remember, small of a place is morocco, the people at each city are different in their manners, lifestyles and even looks. Being at the mountain and close to Spain accounts in part for this diversity.

Most hotels can organize or customize guided hiking trips for visitors (you may have to ask). Both traditional Moroccan cuisine and European food is plentiful at the nearby cafes and restaurants.

The outskirts of the medina where the Defense Walls still stand to tell their stories can be tempting to backpackers for a stroll. Be careful not to stroll too far though as beyond those walls is where Hashish and marijuana are grown.

If your trip does not include going to Fes or Marrakech, Chefchaouen's trinkets and other souvenirs are a savior for budget travelers for their cheap prices yet great designs.

Casa Hassan Hotel is one of the nicest hotels to stay in chefchaouen. Not the only nice one, but one of them.

If you are planning a trip to Fes and can afford some time, stopping by adjacent Meknes, an overlooked gem, is well worth the visit.

Meknes (also spelt Meknès) is located between Fes(60 kilometres) and Rabat(130 kilometres) along the N13 road.

Like other Morocco's imperial cities, it hosts quite few interesting attractions.

Meknes was named after a Berber tribe called the Miknasa(Imknasn in Berber).

Today, it has gained another tourist label "the Versailles of Morocco".

Volubilis (Walili in Arabic).

Situated close to the town of Moulay Idriss, 30 km north of Meknes, Volubilis, an amazing world heritage archaeological site. It features the most preserved ancient Roman ruins. Stunning mosaics, relics, basilica, baths, temples, victory arch.

In recent years, the site has become almost deserted and neglected by local tourism authorities.

Not many tourists are visiting it mostly due to its discouraging detour location. Those into history and archaeology will find it well worth the visit.

Old Medina

Meknes medina is more relaxed and less bustling than Fes and Marrakech's. But it shares a lot in common with the latter.
The winding alleys,narrow streets and closed markets.

No wonder, Meknes was built by the same person who built Marrakech-The Great Moravid Sultan Yousef Ben Tashafin.
You can find good quality artwork in its bazaars and boutiques.

Lhdeem square

Similar to Tangier's The Grand Socco, Lhdeem is a nice relaxed place to get a feel of life in Meknes and its people. Drinks and snacks are tasty and galore.

The Grand Mosque

For muslims, this is a good site to visit. It was built by Sultan Yousef Ben Tashafin and renovated during Mohammed Alnasser reign in 1199.
The entrance of the mosque is a reflection of the Islamic and Andalusion architecture with a Moroccan flavor.

Madrasat Abou Inan

Just close by The Grand Mosque is Madrasat(school of) Abou Inan. An old Moroccan school built in 1345. Those passionate about old craftsmanship,this is a perfect place to visit
It is open for visitors in most days for a small fee.

The Walls of Meknes

Meknes old walls and gates are more than 25 kms long. Among them Bab Mansour, more than 250 years old,stands out. Supported by marble columns and decorated with zellij mosaics,green and white ceramic tiling. It is now used as an arts and crafts gallery. A small taxi (petit taxi) drive is well worth it.

An old gate is referred to as Bab (the same word for door).
Bab Almansoor,Bab Alnoor(the Gate of Light), Bab Alkhamis(Thursday Gate),Bab Jdid (The New gate). These gates are accessible from the place called Lhdeem(the 'h' sound is pronounced as in French and German)
The gates are entrances to many souks,bazaars and markets,so it's also another shopping or simply people watching opportunity.

Dar Aljamee museum

built in 1882 Aljamai who was then prime minister later to be turned into a hospital by the French.
Accessible from lhdeem, this place still features almost intact furnished rooms,ceramics and other interesting stuff. Well worth the visit.

Kubbat lKhayateen

Not known why this name is picked since it was used as a reception hall for foreign ambassadors. Another more pertinent name is Kubbat A Sufara( of ambassadors).

Hri Souani
Hri is Moroccan Arabic for barn. It was built by Moulay Ismail and served as a stable for his 15.000 horses(mostly original Arabian horses donated by horse breeders as gifts to the sultan). The place was also a barn for grain and wheat storage,granaries.

Unfortunately, this building was destroyed by the famous 1755 earthquake that destroyed most of Meknes. It is said that the 1755 earthquake was so powerful it brought the centre of Lisbon down.

Some remaining columns and channels have been restored.
This place is the very setting for the 1988 popular movie "The Last Temptation of Christ" by screenwriter Paul Schrader and Martin Scorcese. The film was based on a novel by Nikos Kazantzakis.

Dar El Makhzen (House of the Governor)

This is one of Moulay Ismail's old palaces that are still being used for the rare occasions the current king visits the city.

Agdal Lake

This a stone-lined basin used by the locals as a weekend retreat and holidays picnics in particular during summer time.

The shrine of Mouly Ismail

located south of the place called Lhdeem, is the Tomb of Mouly Ismail. Tombs in morocco are built in a unique design. Moroccans visit the tombs of their late kings for a mixture of spiritual and nationalistic reasons.

Moulay Ismail is the founder of the current Alwaite Dynasty who made of Meknes the capital of Morocco during his reign(1672–1727). Visitors of all nationalities are allowed in but respectful clothing is required-No shorties or cleavage.

First, let me start by saying that Morocco is different and unique. It is a safe and hospitable country,it has always been as reported by its visitors.

The country and its inhabitants have also changed and adapted to its surroundings throughout the years. That was inevitable to catch up with the world changes in terms of economy and social challenges in particular.

What used to be is no longer the same. And that includes some styerotypes as well both new and old. There are some content published online that negatively tries to taint the reputation of this country. Everytime, those stereotypes are proven wrong-time and again.

So when traveling with children to Morocco safety is not an issue. In fact, traveling en famille is not only safe but funnier than if you would as solo.

There are no special travel arrangements for kids that am aware of. Your child can enjoy just about everything you would.

You will see, watch and enjoy lots of experiences through children's eyes. It,will,for sure be a memorable learning experience for your child.

If you're coming thru europe, get started with a thrilling ferry ride from Tarifa, Spain to Tangier/Morocco.

So yeah, go ahead and take them to visit La grotte d'hercules (Hercules Cave) in Tangiers (you can do a camel ride on the way, too). Take them to the magestic Hassan II mosque in Casablanca, El Badi and El Bahia palaces in Marrakech.

The fabulous kasbahs in Sahara desert (eco Kasbah Ellouze near the world heritage site where Gladiators was shot) and Camel Trekking (Erg Chebbi Dunes,Merzouga). Ask that your kid get involved in a concert of some sort with the Berber kids or spend some time with a Berber nomad family.

If you're interested in history, you can stop by the Roman ruins of Volubilis near Meknes on the way to Fes or Casablanca.

Get'em to try Couscous.

Take the train and navigate thru the maze of 9,400 narrow streets in Fes' old medina. Yes, you go back in time to the medieval age.

And needless to say you would need a guide if you dare to go deeper thru the labyrinthe of alleys of the old medina in Fes (one of the largest living medieval cities in the world). Unless,of course, you or your kid enjoy getting lost.

Whilst there, take them to watch and learn from the callous hands of ancient artisan, leather, tanneries, pottery and mosaics craftsmen.

And if you're lucky, you can stay at Kate and Alaa'DAR SEFFARINE riad for a deeper unschooling adventure.

In Marrakech, awe them by acrobats snake charmers and cobra kissers in Jemaa el Fna.

As in any other country you go to as a traveller, a bit of common sense can be helpful.

Women visiting morocco: Travel tips and advice

In recent years, Morocco has put in place a number of travel and tourism reforms to make the visitors experience in the country as carefree as possible. This has affected transportation, security, guides and lodging.

Morocco is a country of unique lifestyles and is different from your whereabouts. Don’t fall into the comparison trap. Rather, open your mind to the culture, and approach Morocco with an appreciation of cultural differences. Consider yourself an alien visiting another planet and enjoy the exploratory learning. Till you’re back home, you know zip.

Foreign women can travel freely as solo and it is quite safe. A companion can be helpful but is not necessary.

Dress

Dress conservatively, and you can demand respect. If you already dress unprovocatively, you will find you will not even need to alter your regular clothing style by much. In larger cities, many women adopt western styles, so jeans and t- shirts are common.

You do not need to cover yourself completely, wear a veil (hijab), scarf, abaya or a djellaba. The only exception is when visiting Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca. In this case, you need to dress conservatively as you would for a church. You will get assistance for that at the entrance of the mosque as they do gently provide veils and instructions.

Elsewhere,women can wear pants, short sleeves and longer skirts.
Wear a bikini or swimsuit only on the beach or at a pool. You may attract attention and looks out of curiosity in rural areas but that’s harmless, just ignore it and move on. Opt for the one piece. A sundress or shorts to cover up when out of the water is also a good idea.

Remember, the more revealing clothes you wear, the more unwanted attention you get.

Prancing down a Moroccan street in a short skirt and tank top is not the best idea unless you want to be explored instead of exploring. You want to fit and integrate to explore the place. The easy way to do that is to adopt the "When in Rome, do as the Romans do" mindset.

Smoking

Smoking in public is something "good women" don't do. Moroccans consider smoking a manly border that western women sneaked in and crossed at some point in history just to show men that they can(a gesture of feminist liberation movement). Moroccan men are not impressed by their women doing the same. As a foreigner, the restriction does not apply to you and you can smoke, just you don’t get their respect if you care.

In fact, most Moroccan men don’t smoke either. And those who do are looked at with pity as “trapped” into a bad addiction.

Some Moroccan women have chosen to rebel against this tradition and you can find a few smoking mainly in large cities. By now, they are regarded as “loose women”.

If you are approached for a service or unsolicitted help, just kindly say "Non,Shukran" (Arabic for No,thank you - Non is pronounced like nong not like nun). Don't react in a dispising/snobbish manner. Those who are trying to make a buck are still dignified. Many tourists fall into this snob trap.

What is the weather like in Morocco?

These are some of the questions this blog article will attempt to answer.

Morocco's temperature is usually a mild nice and sunny one most of the year.

Winter

The rainy winter months are from November to March.
(some years rain only starts in december). The rainfall pattern is marked by breaks,so it is not incessant and hence some nice sunny days even in the middle of winter. In this season Coastal cities can be both cool,wet,slightly snowy and a bit cold.

The Atlas mountains region is the coldest in this season with temperature drops averaging -20 C in Ifrane,Azrou and Hajb. The Atlas mountains region gets lots of snow in winter months. Temperature can go down to -10 C even in Marrakech. Actually,you can even ski in Oukaimeden just a bit further away from Marrakech

Summer

Day temperature can get hot (45 C) in the non-coastal cities (Marrakech,Fes and the Sahara desert region in southern and southwest Morocco). The heat is dry though. This hot zone enjoys a cooler night, even a bit cold.

July-August is the high tourist season and is crowdier and hottest. So you want to book your hotel in advance preferrably along the coasts.

Though Rabat enjoys a coastal breeze, it can be humid in some summer days. Sunscreen, bottled water and cotton shirts are recommended.

The best time to visit Marrakech is in the spring and autumn (sunny days and cooler nights). At this time of year when days start to get shorter, there are more opportunties to enjoy those roof top restaurants overlooking the Djemma el-Fna since you can go there starting 3 or 4pm.

But If you happened to be in Marrakech in summer, you can take a break from its heat by travelling to the nearby cooler Atlas Mountains(Ifrane) or the coastal Essaouira.

Best time to visit Morocco is Late March/Early April.

Visiting Morocco From Spain - Transportation Information.

Morocco lies just 14 kilometers (9 miles) from Spain.

Flying is the easiest, fastest and less expensive way to travel to Morocco.

From Europe, Atlas Blue-North Africa's first budget charter airline is reported to have low cost airline airfares and operates flights from and to different cities in Morocco. Recommended for a flight from Madrid or Barcelona to Marrakech. Ryanair also offers a competitive fare fro Madrid or Barcelona to Fes.

In general, there are three ways to get to Morocco: Aeroplanes,trains and cars. From North America and some parts of asia, you are restricted to flights,which is fortunate. Long-distance flights will arrive at Casablanca Airport.

Cars and ferries can be used from Europe. From Paris,France you have the option of driving to Spain or taking the tedious and relatively long TGV trip to Algeciras and then taking the ferry to Tangiers.

The popular route option for tourists coming from Spain is the ferry from Algeciras(Spain) to Tangier. High speed ferries can take just 30 minutes to cross. Slower ferries are a little cheaper.

There are regular ferry services connecting Algeciras to Tangier or Cueta.
On the crossing border,there is a strict monitoring against illegal car smuggling,contraband,clandestine immigration and drug smuggling from both the Spaniards and Moroccans.

Trying to get a car into Morocco can be a hassle and time-consuming.So get your paperwork ready and be prepared for some impatient queuing.

Other options include crossing from Malaga(Spain) to either Tangier or Mellila(Spanish Morocco). But the most popular ferry services are:

Tarifa-Tangier run by FRS every hour from 9am till 11pm. 37 Euros for an adult single foot passenger (price may have changed, please check with the agency). The ferry ride takes 1h/15m.

Algeciras-tangier run by ACCIONA at 7am,9:30am,2pm,2:30pm,and 10pm.The ferry ride takes 2h/30m.

Recently, FRS has also started running the Algeciras-tangier route with three daily round trips.

ACCIONA and FRS are the two main ferry companies. Remember there is 1 hour time difference between Spain and Morocco.

Tip: You can actually take a ferry ride directly from Barcelona to Tangier without having to travel to southern spain(algeciras & Tarifa).

Note: Atlas Blue is no longer. It has merged with Royal Air Maroc.

Once in Morocco, trains and rented cars are the two main transport modes in the country.

Visiting Morocco during Ramadan.

Is visiting Morocco during the fasting month of Ramadan a bad or a good time to travel ?

Will the resaurant,shops and souks be closed?

Will it be offending to people to eat in daytime during Ramadan?

Though Ramadan is a fasting month for Muslims, it does not have to conflict with tourism in Morocco.

Non-muslims are not obliged to stop eating or drinking. But total indifference can send an insulting message,even upset some people.

Remember,these people are human beings and as such abstaining from eating and drinking is difficult for them as it is.

With you Eating and drinking in a noticeable way makes it even harder for them. So if you can afford to be respectful,you can try to be discreet about your daytime eating and drinking by doing it out of their sight.

By observing this and being sensible,you will be helping them.
Also by showing respect, you will get closer to them and they will be appreciative.

Coffee shops, restaurants and food places that usually serve fresh meals during the day will be closed.

In some tourist cities like Agadir,some restaurants can still be open mainly to serve tourists.

Shops and supermarkets are of course open till near dusk to allow staff to go break the fast with their families.

Usually, shops will close at midday for lunch. That is not applicable during Ramadan.

Souks are always open but sellers who usually sell cooked food will not be there. You can still buy canned food, cookies, yogart, coke, bread, eggs, jam. Self catering is also a good idea since Breakfast may not be readily available in some guesthouses/riads.

There is a restriction on the sale of alcohol five days before the start and five days after the end of Ramadan period.

All bars and the alcohol sections in supermarkets are usually closed for that period.The exception is hotels'bars.

In some lager cities, non-muslim foreigners who can show their passports can get it from the supermarket.

If you have nothing to measure weight in your kitchen and need to know it in cups

1 once = 2 tablespoons (4 ounces or 100 grams = 8 tablespoons)

300 grams(12 ounces) = 24 tablespoons
